Kerosene is called by different names as kerosine, paraffin or paraffin oil. It is a combustible hydrocarbon liquid which is predominantly utilised as a fuel. Kerosene is a blend of hydrocarbons in its chemical form. In general, it appears pale yellow in colour, or is colourless. The boiling point of kerosene is between 150 and 300 °C and is believed to be one of the supposed middle distillates of crude oil and diesel fuel. It does not have an unpleasant smell and is produced from petroleum. Kerosene is utilised for burning in kerosene lamps and home heaters or furnaces.

The leading kerosene producer in the world is the United States. The other primary countries include China, the Republic of Korea, Japan, and the Netherlands.

The basic fuel used in commercial jets is significantly superior quality straight-run kerosene, and numerous military jet fuels are combinations that are made on the basis of kerosene chemicals. In addition, in several countries, such as Ireland and the United Kingdom, the fuel is widely utilised in lanterns and kerosene lamps. Moreover, kerosene is generally believed to be an excellent substitute for solid fuels, biomass, and coal; hence, it is used in areas without electricity availability.
