 Terephthalic acid (C6H4(CO2H)2) is an organic crystalline acid that is white in color and is primarily used as a precursor to polyester PET. The compound comprises eight carbon, six hydrogen, and four oxygen atoms, with a molar mass of 166.132 g-mol -1. The compound is insoluble in water, slightly soluble in hot ethanol, and completely soluble in alkali solutions. Along with water, it is also soluble in some of the common solvents, such as acetic acid, chloroform, and ether. The melting point of the compound measures around 300° C. The chemical is synthesized commercially by the Amoco process, where p-xylene undergoes catalytic oxidation to attain Terephthalic acid as the product. It is widely used to manufacture PET which has various commercial utilizations.
