Kerosene, variously known as paraffin or lamp oil, is a low viscosity, combustible, clear liquid that is extracted from petroleum. It is an odourless liquid at room temperature with a clear to pale yellow color. However, when kerosene burns, it gives a strong smoke odour. It is most commonly used as fuel in aviation and for household uses. In parts of Asia, it is used as fuel for small outboard motors or even motorcycles.
Some of the major producers of kerosene are the United States, Canada, and Russia, among others. In the United States, the refinery output of kerosene has increased at a healthy rate. The growth of kerosene is high, owing to the increase in the consumption of kerosene for cooking and lighting fuel. The Canadian kerosene market saw a dramatic fluctuation in the consumption of kerosene, and this resulted in a very low consumption in May 2020. The market was seen to revive in June 2020. Due to the ban of international flights in the initial part of 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the demand for aviation fuel plummeted. This hindered the growth of the kerosene industry. In India, there was a decline in kerosene demand in the second quarter of 2020 by almost 40%. Thus, kerosene, which is used in jet fuel, will temporarily be impacted by airline restrictions. These factors are expected to influence the production costs of kerosene.

The production cost report by Procurement Resource assesses the production of kerosene via the fractional distillation method. This process first involves the extraction of crude oil from the earth. Its components are then separated through heating. Kerosene is evaporated between 150°C and 250°C temperature. It is condensed and collected in a separate chamber. In the last stage, it is purified through catalytic reforming, alkylation, catalytic cracking, and hydro-processing.
